The Co-Main Event Podcast

Luke Rockhold returns from more than a year away, takes some time to shake off the rust and ultimately emerges from UFC Fight Night 116 with a second-round win via strikes over Dave Branch. Pretty much just what the doctor ordered for Rockhold, who got some decent work in, faced some adversity and then nonetheless re-established himself as one of the very best middleweights in the UFC. Interesting thing is going to see what happens now, what with Michael Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre still on tap near the end of the year. Depending on who wins that bad boy, the 185-pound division might still have some time to kill before anybody gets a chance to take on the champion. In addition to Rockhold, Mike Perry had himself a night on Saturday, and then went ahead and called out Robbie Lawler. As if that what wasn’t enough hot Octagonal action for you, UFC Fight Night 117 comes at you this week, featuring Ovince St. Preux vs. Yushin Okami as its main event. Ben and Chad talk about all this stuff and more on this week’s Co-Main Event Podcast.

Plus, AYFKM and Just Sayin’ Stuff.

Demetrious Johnson didn’t get his chance to break Anderson Silva’s record for consecutive UFC title defenses after all. Not when Ray Borg got pulled from their scheduled UFC 215 main event just prior to the weigh-in, owing to a “viral infection.” So instead, company brass turned the marquee attraction of this fight card over to the women’s bantamweight title bout pitting Amanda Nunes against Valentina Shevchenko and it … well, it was a thing that totally happened. It wasn’t terrible by any stretch. It also wasn’t great. Some people seemed to like it. The absence of DJ vs. Borg didn’t keep the men’s flyweight division from being interesting, however, after Henry Cejudo showed up to do his best Conor McGregor impression on Wilson Reis’ face. In addition to all this hot action, your dudes Ben and Chad look ahead to next week’s fight card, headlined by Luke Rockhold’s return against Dave Branch.

Back to business, Co-Mainiacs! After the months-long fever dream that was Mayweather vs. McGregor this week finds Ben and Chad thrust back into sober (and somewhat sobering) MMA action. For Episode 271 of our beloved CME, your dudes look at some storylines leftover from UFC Fight Night 11, including the emergence of Zabit Magomedsharipov as well as the suddenly divergent careers of Stefan Struve and Alexander Volkov. In addition to that, they look ahead to this weekend’s UFC 215 card, where two under-the-radar championships will be on the line. Demetrious Johnson looks to make history, vying to break Anderson Silva’s record for consecutive UFC title defenses as he puts his flyweight title on the line against Ray Borg. Also, Amanda Nunes calls a do-over in her women’s bantamweight scrap against Valentina Shevchenko.

Welp, here it is, CME Universe, the last episode of the Co-Main Event Podcast where you have to listen to Chad and Ben spend any significant time talking about Mayweather-McGregor. And really, is that so wrong? Heck, the damn fight turned out to be more fun than anyone expected, with Conor McGregor outperforming everyone’s expectations and Floyd Mayweather letting him do it for as long as he felt like it (but not a second longer). So this week your dudes talk about McGregor’s surprising performance as well as what’s next for the UFC lightweight champion. A UFC lightweight championship defense perhaps? LOL. Don’t make them laugh. Oh, also, your dudes hold heartbreaking discussion on Jon Jones’ lastest positive drug test and spend some cursory time contemplating this weekend’s UFC Fight Night.

Well, Co-Mainiacs, here we are. The moment is upon us. History unfolds before our very eyes. On this week’s Co-Main Event Podcast, Ben and Chad take a last, pre-fight look at the boxing match pitting Floyd Mayweather against Conor McGregor. How did we get here? How will it go? What’s next for the UFC lightweight champion and the fight company’s biggest draw? All of this stuff gets discussed. Don’t worry though, MMA purists, some of mixed-rules fighting’s biggest weekly headlines see the light of day as well. Junior dos Santos flagged by USADA? Masvidal vs. Wonder Man? Matt Brown vs. Diego Sanchez? All this stuff is on the schedule.

Perhaps you thought it was an ain’t shit going on kind of week, eh Universe? If that’s what you did anticipate, Ben and Chad don’t blame you. With the UFC clearing the lane for Aug. 26’s Mayweather vs. McGregor boxing match the waters are relatively quiet in the MMA world. Still, there was #enoughshitgoinon that your dudes managed to fill three rounds with it for this episode of the Co-Main Event Podcast. For starters they try to break down all the relevant storylines suddenly cropping up with just 12 days to go before Mayweather-McGregor. In addition to that, they talk about Ben’s latest story on MMA Junkie, about whether UFC fighters should still be considered independent contractors. On top of that, Georges St-Pierre’s middleweight title shot against Michael Bisping is now official for UFC 217, so you better believe that also gets some consideration.

Did you enjoy UFC Fight Night 114, CME Universe? Your dudes Ben and Chad hope you did because that’s all the live MMA action inside the Octagon that you’re going to get between now and Sept. 2. Fortunately, you’ll be able to fill you empty weeks listening to dudes TALK about fighting, at least. On this episode, for example, the guys turn their attention to big wins for Sergio Pettis and Alexa Grasso on the UFN 114 card. In addition to that they discuss the budding feud between Conor McGregor and boxer-turned-sparring-partner Paulie Maglignaggi. The Magic Man! They also take a long moment to consider August and whether it’s a good or bad thing that the month will give fans a break in the UFC’s hard-charging live event schedule.

After Saturday night’s UFC 214, the Co-Main Event Podcast is spent. Following the drama and the comedy, the triumph and the heartbreak, the entire MMA community should probably be cooling its heels somewhere on beach right now, toes in the sand, bottle of Coors Lite balanced precariously on our knees. But that’s not how we roll, is it? Nope, Ben and Chad are strapped in and ready to debrief this week, taking on all aspects of the UFC 214 main event. Firstly, there was Jon Jones, who rose to a new level of greatness when confronted by his fiercest rival and, now once again light heavyweight champion, has solidified the notion he’s the greatest ever to do the damn thing. Secondly, there was Daniel Cormier, whose title reign ended in heartbreak but whose character and contributions to the sport should also sew-up his hall of famer status. Thirdly, there was Brock Lesnar. Wait, what? That’s right, Jonny Bones may next take on the Mayor of Suplex City. Because we can’t go one single weekend without things getting weird.

The Co-Main Event Podcast returns this week with a gargantuan show to handle an MMA news cycle that doth overfloweth with insane action. Ben and Chad convene to discuss Chris Weidman’s potentially career-saving victory over Kelvin Gastelum at last weekend’s UFC on Fox 25. They also look ahead to the ultra-stacked UFC 214 on Saturday night, where light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier will finally rematch with former champ Jon Jones. And yes, it still feels weird to say it in that order. In addition to that, your dudes look at Tyron Woodley’s welterweight title fight against Demian Maia, Cris Cyborg finally getting her shot to wear UFC gold vs. Tonya Evinger and whether or not we should all be real quiet and let the MMA gods slumber until Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone finally get in the cage.

All that plus AYFKM and Just Sayin’ Stuff.

Can you hear us, Co-Main Event Universe? Look, we realize you may be confused since A) This episode of the CME is dropping a day later than normal and B) Your ears may still be ringing from last week’s Floyd Mayweather-Conor McGregor press “world tour” but here--in all its glory--is episode 264 of our little podcast. In it, your guys Ben and Chad spend a while talking about the silliness of the May-Mac Press Excursion and whether the sometimes ugly rhetoric will help or hurt pay-per-view sales. They also talk about a big win over the weekend for Santiago Ponzinibbio (of all people) at UFC Fight Night 113 and then turn their attention to next weekend’s UFC on Fox 25. At that event, Chris Weidman faces Kelvin Gastelum in a main event that shapes up as a must-win, lest Weidman complete a fall from grace that can only be described as “Johny-esque.”
