The Co-Main Event Podcast (general)

Darren Till made the most of his first real spotlight moment in the Octagon on Saturday at UFC Fight Night 118, blowing through Donald Cerrone via first round TKO. Now it seems as though Till might be looking at a future matchup with Mike Perry, provided Platinum Mike gets past Santiago Ponzinibbio. So that could be something to look forward to watching. Also this weekend, Gegard Mousasi made his Bellator MMA debut, sneaking past Alexander Shlemenko via unanimous decision after getting his eye all kinds of wrecked by a Shlemenko left hand. Did you know next weekend marks the return of Lyoto Machida? Your dudes Ben and Chad talk about all that stuff. Oh, plus Conor McGregor’s ugly remarks to Artem Lobov. They talk about that, too.

Gdansk, Gdansk, Gdansk is where the UFC journeys this weekend for Fight Night 118. The main event of that card features Donald Cerrone against Darren Till, which is kind of a strange marquee matchup until you consider that Till might well have his eye on being the new Donald Cerrone. On this week’s episode of the Co-Main Event Podcast, Ben and Chad discuss what matchmakers might want to get from Cerrone vs. Till. They also look at Mark Hunt’s latest falling out with the UFC, which bubbled over in a profane and emoji-filled war of words this week. Also, did you know it’s only three weeks until UFC 217 and Michael Bisping’s encounter with Georges St-Pierre? So, like, only 100 staredowns to go before those guys get in the cage and do the damn thing over the middleweight title.

No big deal, you guys. Demetrious Johnson is just going to toss Ray Borg up in the air like a small child and then armbar him as he plummets to earth (which is something we absolutely do NOT recommend doing to a child). If you are one of these people who insists on continuing to try to cast aspersions on the UFC men’s flyweight champ--well--you starting to feel sheepish yet? Clearly, Johnson is on some otherworldly shit … and that’s why this week’s Co-Main Event Podcast wholeheartedly endorses him taking on the winner of Cody Garbrandt vs. T.J. Dillashaw next. Ben and Chad agree, it’s sort of a “been there, done that” feel with Mighty Mouse fighting other flyweight contenders at this point. Time to see how high the Mouse can fly, you know? In addition to that, your dudes talk about Tony Ferguson’s interim lightweight title win over Kevin Lee and then look at the notion of Lee fighting this fight with a big ol’ staph infection on his chest. So you might say there’s a little something in this episode for everyone.

UFC 216 comes our way this weekend from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The event will go on, the UFC says, just days after the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history struck the Las Vegas strip. It casts a macabre shadow from which to try to view an evening of MMA action, but that’s where we are in this country at the moment. On this episode of the CME, Ben and Chad look at Demetrious Johnson finally getting his chance to break Anderson Silva’s record for consecutive UFC title defenses. They also talk about Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee squaring off for an interim lightweight title and perhaps the opportunity to be a future opponent for Conor McGregor. Speaking of McGregor, the fighting Irishman made his first public appearance since losing to Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match. He had some ideas about who he’ll fight next. A lot of ideas, actually.

A pretty low-quality UFC event and a pretty high-quality Bellator event paced the weekend in MMA and you know that kind of role reversal is enough to get the creative juices flowing for the CME. On this episode, Ben and Chad talk about Jessica Andrade and Claudia Gadelha having a crackerjack women’s strawweight contender fight at UFC Fight Night 117. They also puzzle over the debut of Gokhan Saki and wonder if it’s good enough to be a fun fighter without being a terribly good one. They also take a broad look at what Bellator did, including a second fight for Aaron Pico, a highlight reel knockout for Paul Daley and a very Benson Henderson fight to cap things off.

Luke Rockhold returns from more than a year away, takes some time to shake off the rust and ultimately emerges from UFC Fight Night 116 with a second-round win via strikes over Dave Branch. Pretty much just what the doctor ordered for Rockhold, who got some decent work in, faced some adversity and then nonetheless re-established himself as one of the very best middleweights in the UFC. Interesting thing is going to see what happens now, what with Michael Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre still on tap near the end of the year. Depending on who wins that bad boy, the 185-pound division might still have some time to kill before anybody gets a chance to take on the champion. In addition to Rockhold, Mike Perry had himself a night on Saturday, and then went ahead and called out Robbie Lawler. As if that what wasn’t enough hot Octagonal action for you, UFC Fight Night 117 comes at you this week, featuring Ovince St. Preux vs. Yushin Okami as its main event. Ben and Chad talk about all this stuff and more on this week’s Co-Main Event Podcast.

Plus, AYFKM and Just Sayin’ Stuff.

Demetrious Johnson didn’t get his chance to break Anderson Silva’s record for consecutive UFC title defenses after all. Not when Ray Borg got pulled from their scheduled UFC 215 main event just prior to the weigh-in, owing to a “viral infection.” So instead, company brass turned the marquee attraction of this fight card over to the women’s bantamweight title bout pitting Amanda Nunes against Valentina Shevchenko and it … well, it was a thing that totally happened. It wasn’t terrible by any stretch. It also wasn’t great. Some people seemed to like it. The absence of DJ vs. Borg didn’t keep the men’s flyweight division from being interesting, however, after Henry Cejudo showed up to do his best Conor McGregor impression on Wilson Reis’ face. In addition to all this hot action, your dudes Ben and Chad look ahead to next week’s fight card, headlined by Luke Rockhold’s return against Dave Branch.

Back to business, Co-Mainiacs! After the months-long fever dream that was Mayweather vs. McGregor this week finds Ben and Chad thrust back into sober (and somewhat sobering) MMA action. For Episode 271 of our beloved CME, your dudes look at some storylines leftover from UFC Fight Night 11, including the emergence of Zabit Magomedsharipov as well as the suddenly divergent careers of Stefan Struve and Alexander Volkov. In addition to that, they look ahead to this weekend’s UFC 215 card, where two under-the-radar championships will be on the line. Demetrious Johnson looks to make history, vying to break Anderson Silva’s record for consecutive UFC title defenses as he puts his flyweight title on the line against Ray Borg. Also, Amanda Nunes calls a do-over in her women’s bantamweight scrap against Valentina Shevchenko.

Welp, here it is, CME Universe, the last episode of the Co-Main Event Podcast where you have to listen to Chad and Ben spend any significant time talking about Mayweather-McGregor. And really, is that so wrong? Heck, the damn fight turned out to be more fun than anyone expected, with Conor McGregor outperforming everyone’s expectations and Floyd Mayweather letting him do it for as long as he felt like it (but not a second longer). So this week your dudes talk about McGregor’s surprising performance as well as what’s next for the UFC lightweight champion. A UFC lightweight championship defense perhaps? LOL. Don’t make them laugh. Oh, also, your dudes hold heartbreaking discussion on Jon Jones’ lastest positive drug test and spend some cursory time contemplating this weekend’s UFC Fight Night.

Well, Co-Mainiacs, here we are. The moment is upon us. History unfolds before our very eyes. On this week’s Co-Main Event Podcast, Ben and Chad take a last, pre-fight look at the boxing match pitting Floyd Mayweather against Conor McGregor. How did we get here? How will it go? What’s next for the UFC lightweight champion and the fight company’s biggest draw? All of this stuff gets discussed. Don’t worry though, MMA purists, some of mixed-rules fighting’s biggest weekly headlines see the light of day as well. Junior dos Santos flagged by USADA? Masvidal vs. Wonder Man? Matt Brown vs. Diego Sanchez? All this stuff is on the schedule.

All that, plus AYFKM and Just Saying Stuff.
