The Co-Main Event Podcast (general)

Junior dos Santos outdueled Blagoy Ivanov in the main event of UFC Fight Night 133 on Saturday, though the unanimous decision win wasn’t exactly the home run needed to declare the former champion well and truly “back.” Elsewhere, Stipe Miocic is hopping mad at the notion Daniel Cormier might actually face Brock Lesnar instead of giving him an immediate rematch. On this week’s Co-Main Event Podcast, Ben and Chad discuss the state of the heavyweight division, Miocic’s beef and what the heck is going on with Lesnar’s teeth. In addition, they discuss the Brendan Schaub-Dana White feud, which veered into truly regrettable territory this week. Also, did you know Shogun Rua fights this weekend in Hamburg, Germany? And, uh, are we seriously talking about this dude for potential light heavyweight title shot?

All that plus AYFKM, Just Sayin’ Stuff and Tips for the Well-Rounded Fight Fan.

Now that we’ve all stopped hyperventilating following UFC 226, the Co-Main Event Podcast is here to break down all of the action. On this episode, Ben and Chad discuss the catharsis of seeing Daniel Cormier win the heavyweight title, even if it meant toppling somewhat likeable dude Stipe Miocic. They also talk about the reemergence of Brock Lesnar, who strode back into MMA with his suit pants tucked into his cowboy boots, his potty mouth blazing and his bro-shove skills as wicked hot as ever. He’s here to rake in another pile of money and take a final swipe at becoming UFC heavyweight champion all over again. Is that a GOOD thing, though? Oh, and what the heck is going on with Francis Ngannou? Your dudes chop it up.

The Big Daddy is finally here--it’s UFC 226 fight week. Your dudes are pretty hyped for what may well turn out to be the biggest fight card of the year. On this episode of the CME, Ben and Chad look at the bonafide superfight that is Stipe Miocic vs. Daniel Cormier. It’s champion vs. champion in a bout that also happens to be an interesting matchup of athletic traits, but will it deliver at the box office? Not to be outshined, the co-main event contest pitting Max Holloway against Brian Ortega for the men’s featherweight strap is also bananas. Oh, and did you catch it last week when the guys tried to jinx the UFC 226 undercard, only to have the ensuing injury (sorry, Yancy Medeiros!) perhaps IMPROVE things? Yeah, Ben and Chad really push their luck this week.

An unexpectedly busy MMA weekend leaves the Co-Main Event Podcast with plenty to talk about this week. Donald Cerrone dropped to 1-4 in his last five after a hotly contested unanimous decision loss to Leon Edwards at UFC: Singapore. So, why do Ben and Chad feel like he’s embodying the “Cowboy” mystique more than ever? Plus, the Professional Fighters League showed off its wares and Bellator made a flurry of intriguing moves. Could it be that the two smaller organizations are outmaneuvering the UFC in the short term? Oh yeah, plus UFC 226 is coming up in a couple weeks. That show is so damn big your dudes have no choice but to start breaking it down a little early.

With Chad newly returned from his family trip, the CME is back to its normal schedule this week with a lot of stuff to catch up on. Firstly, there was UFC 225, which included big wins from Robert Whittaker, Colby Covington, Holly Holm and others. Chad and Ben spend a good chunk of this show talking about that event. Also, there was the Dana White Tuesday Night Contender Series, which saw disgraced former NFL player Greg Hardy score a UFC developmental deal after a 57-second knockout win. Oh yeah, the guys also set a very appropriate date for the next installment of the CME book club and announce some exciting upcoming giveaways. It’s truly something you won’t want to miss.

UFC 225 is right around the corner, so this week’s Co-Main Event Podcast largely concerns itself getting you ready for that event. What does middleweight champion Robert Whittaker have to prove--or gain--fighting Yoel Romero a second time? Is Colby Covington actually getting over on us with his “heel” gimmick? Does Alistair Overeem have legitimate beef for being left off the pay-per-view portion of the card? Oh, yeah--and CM Punk. What … exactly … can … we … expect … from … him? And do we care? Plus, you know Ben just returned from a weekend jaunt to Wyoming, where he took in some bare knuckle boxing. So Chad makes sure we all get to that bottom of that little pleasure cruise. Why? Because the CME Universe deserves it, that’s why

After a short break for Memorial Day, the CME is back--and just in time to discuss the retirement of Michael Bisping. Bisping announced his exit from MMA on his own podcast on Monday, nicely teeing-up Ben and Chad to discuss one of the UFC’s most unique careers on Tuesday. In addition to that, they look at Darren Till’s “win” (?) over Stephen Thompson at UFC Fight Night 130, which didn’t exactly launch Till into the stratosphere like perhaps matchmakers hoped it might. Oh yeah, and Bellator 200 crowned a new middleweight champion (Gegard Mousasi!) and prompts your dudes to ask: How long we gonna let Michael Page simmer before finding him some competition?

Yeah, so Kamaru Usman’s unanimous decision win over Demian Maia in the main event of UFC Fight Night 129 wasn’t exactly a crowd-pleaser. Usman largely wore Maia around the cage like a hat, but compared to the two first-round stoppages in the previous fights, it fell flat. Still, some interesting stuff for Ben and Chad to talk about did come out of it. What to make of Usman now as one of the UFC’s seemingly endless string of young, talented up-and-comers who feel like they could be nice puzzle pieces … if only the UFC could harness their potential. In addition to that fight, your dudes look ahead to Friday’s Bellator 200 and Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 130. Which will you want if you’ve only got one night to spare?

Ben and Chad take back everything they said last week about how maybe UFC 224 and Bellator 199 wasn’t going to be all that. As it happened, shit was *flames emoji*. Amanda Nunes crafted her third straight women’s bantamweight title defense with a beatdown of Raquel Pennington in the UFC 224 main event. Fast-forward a couple days, however, and the hottest topic of conversation appears to be Pennington’s corner sending her back out for the fifth round after she told them she was “done” following the fourth. In that event’s co-main event, Jacare Souza and Kelvin Gastelum got themselves into a real slobberknocker. Not to be outdone, Bellator 199 was also full of crazy stoppages, including Ryan Bader's 15-second KO of Mo Lawal in the main event and Aaron Pico getting another first-round finish. All things will be discussed this week. All things.

All that, plus AYFKM and JSS.

UFC 224 comes our way from Rio de Janeiro this Saturday, featuring Amanda Nunes defending her women’s bantamweight title against Raquel Pennington in its main event. Good news, though, Universe. If you’re feeling a little light in the wallet this weekend--or maybe you just don’t want to pay $65 for this card on principle--Bellator 199 is the same night live and free on the Paramount Network. That event features Ryan Bader’s bout against King Mo to close out the opening round of Bellator’s heavyweight grand prix. So, which option would Ben and Chad take if they weren't professional MMA journalists? Find out during this episode of the Co-Main Event Podcast! Plus, what’s going on with InvictaFC these days? How is that FightPass streaming deal working out?
