The Co-Main Event Podcast

After a short break for Memorial Day, the CME is back--and just in time to discuss the retirement of Michael Bisping. Bisping announced his exit from MMA on his own podcast on Monday, nicely teeing-up Ben and Chad to discuss one of the UFC’s most unique careers on Tuesday. In addition to that, they look at Darren Till’s “win” (?) over Stephen Thompson at UFC Fight Night 130, which didn’t exactly launch Till into the stratosphere like perhaps matchmakers hoped it might. Oh yeah, and Bellator 200 crowned a new middleweight champion (Gegard Mousasi!) and prompts your dudes to ask: How long we gonna let Michael Page simmer before finding him some competition?

Yeah, so Kamaru Usman’s unanimous decision win over Demian Maia in the main event of UFC Fight Night 129 wasn’t exactly a crowd-pleaser. Usman largely wore Maia around the cage like a hat, but compared to the two first-round stoppages in the previous fights, it fell flat. Still, some interesting stuff for Ben and Chad to talk about did come out of it. What to make of Usman now as one of the UFC’s seemingly endless string of young, talented up-and-comers who feel like they could be nice puzzle pieces … if only the UFC could harness their potential. In addition to that fight, your dudes look ahead to Friday’s Bellator 200 and Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 130. Which will you want if you’ve only got one night to spare?

Ben and Chad take back everything they said last week about how maybe UFC 224 and Bellator 199 wasn’t going to be all that. As it happened, shit was *flames emoji*. Amanda Nunes crafted her third straight women’s bantamweight title defense with a beatdown of Raquel Pennington in the UFC 224 main event. Fast-forward a couple days, however, and the hottest topic of conversation appears to be Pennington’s corner sending her back out for the fifth round after she told them she was “done” following the fourth. In that event’s co-main event, Jacare Souza and Kelvin Gastelum got themselves into a real slobberknocker. Not to be outdone, Bellator 199 was also full of crazy stoppages, including Ryan Bader's 15-second KO of Mo Lawal in the main event and Aaron Pico getting another first-round finish. All things will be discussed this week. All things.

All that, plus AYFKM and JSS.

UFC 224 comes our way from Rio de Janeiro this Saturday, featuring Amanda Nunes defending her women’s bantamweight title against Raquel Pennington in its main event. Good news, though, Universe. If you’re feeling a little light in the wallet this weekend--or maybe you just don’t want to pay $65 for this card on principle--Bellator 199 is the same night live and free on the Paramount Network. That event features Ryan Bader’s bout against King Mo to close out the opening round of Bellator’s heavyweight grand prix. So, which option would Ben and Chad take if they weren't professional MMA journalists? Find out during this episode of the Co-Main Event Podcast! Plus, what’s going on with InvictaFC these days? How is that FightPass streaming deal working out?
