The Co-Main Event Podcast

It’s always a good week on the Co-Main Event Podcast when Ben and Chad get to talk Fedor Emelianenko news that isn’t patently depressing. Therefore, Emelianenko’s weekend victory over Frank Mir at Bellator 198 is cause for celebration. Except, you know, you guys, let’s not get too crazy. Yes, for 48 seconds there he looked like a fighter you might describe as “Old Fedor” and actually mean it as a compliment. But your dudes get the sneaking feeling this respite from the inevitable might be short-lived. Still, let’s live it up while we can. Also, did Bellator get exactly the heavyweight grand prix outcomes it wanted so far? Finally, in a stunning CME first, Ben and Chad both present ideas for what they might talk about it round three: Ben Askren or the PFL “million dollar” tournaments? Whose ideas reign supreme?

All that, plus AYFKM and Just Sayin’ Stuff.

Just in case there was any confusion about who they were, Kevin Lee and Frankie Edgar took to the cage Saturday at UFC Fight Night 128 to remind us all. Lee got his point across en route to a fifth round doctor’s stoppage over the much-brutalized Edson Barboza. As for the Old Man? Well, he looked very much like the best version of himself while outdistancing Cub Swanson via unanimous decision. Funny thing about those wins, though: They both left your dudes Ben and Chad wondering what exactly comes next for Lee and Edgar. Good thing this episode of the Co-Main Event Podcast is here to to try to answer those--and many other--questions. In addition to Lee and Edgar, your guys take a look at the upcoming Bellator 198 card and try to forecast how Fedor Emelianenko vs. Frank Mir might go down.

Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje had themselves a gem on Saturday in the main event of UFC on FOX 29. To say we are not surprised, motherfuckers, would be an enormous understatement. As two of the most dependable action fighters in UFC, both Poirier and Gaethje lived up to their gimmicks in this all-out brawl, which ultimately ended as a fourth-round TKO victory for Poirier. This was one of those fights where both guys emerged as arguably more likable than before. Especially for Poirier, this hard-fought victory made Ben and Chad wake up to the notion that “The Diamond” might be a pretty cool dude. In addition to that bout, your guys talk about Carlos Condit’s extended skid and this weekend’s UFC Fight Night 128, featuring Frankie Edgar vs. Cub Swanson and Edson Barboza vs. Kevin Lee.

All that plus AYFKM and Just Sayin’ Stuff.

Remember last week’s Co-Main Event Podcast, when Ben and Chad felt lucky that Tony Ferguson had been removed from UFC 223 on a Sunday, thereby (they thought) allowing them to dodge the CME News Curse for fight week? LOL. That shit feels like it happened 100 years ago, right? We were all so young then, back before anybody had even thrown a hand truck through the window of a charter bus full of their coworkers. Back before Ragin’ Al slid into a UFC main event like the DMs of a 29-year-old HR rep he met down at the shore. Back before Dana White had called the McGregor bus siege the “most disgusting” thing ever to happen in the UFC and then two days later made peace with it enough to note that a lot worse stuff happens in other sports (which, OK, fair point) and comment “I’ll take a dolly through a window any day.” Mmmmkay. Here, your dudes talk McGregor, Nurmy, Al, Rose, Joanna and a whole bunch more of UFC 223 craziness.

Episode 300! Good thing your dudes didn’t have big plans about how they would spend this milestone episode of the Co-Main Event Podcast, since the MMA world up and went kablammo on Sunday night about 5 p.m. in the OTTZ. So, instead of doing a bunch of navel gazing about how many hours of podcast time they’ve spent sitting across the table from each other, Ben and Chad actually talk MMA. Here, they marvel, near-dumbfounded at Tony Ferguson’s late withdrawal from UFC 223 and his pending lightweight title fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov. Four times they’ve tried to book this fight now and four times it has fallen through. Now we get Nurmy vs. Max Holloway, though. That’ll be an awesome fight, but one that has far reaching consequences in both the lightweight and featherweight divisions. Aside from all that mess, the guys study the strawweight championship rematch between Rose Namajunas and Joanna Jedrzejczyk, which has been surprisingly drama-free leading up to UFC 223. Knock on wood.

All that, plus AYFKM and JSS.
