The Co-Main Event Podcast

Show of hands if a couple weeks ago you predicted that a boomerang toss would take up a good portion of Co-Main Event Podcast episode 282? Yeah, Ben and Chad did not see that coming either. In the wake of Fabricio Werdum’s confrontation with Colby Covington on the streets of Sydney, that’s where we’re at. That little scuffle didn’t stop Werdum from making it to the cage to decision Marcin Tybura at Fight Night 121, naturally. In addition to talking about the fight and the fling, your dudes discuss Michael Bisping making a quick turnaround to fight Kelvin Gastelum next weekend. Oh, and what the devil is up with UFC 219?

All that, plus AYFKM and Just Sayin’ Stuff.

Seriously, how worried should we be about Conor McGregor? After another weekend where the UFC lightweight champion attended an MMA event as a fan and ended up causing a borderline international incident, the Co-Main Event Podcast is starting to wonder. This week, Ben and Chad take a look at McGregor’s recent behavior and ask if they should shrug it off like they would Michael Bisping showing up drunk to a press conference or if this stuff signals more serious, Jon Jones-style troubles ahead. There were also fights this weekend, so your dudes talk about the futures of Dustin Poirier, Anthony Pettis, Matt Brown and Diego Sanchez. And are they hype for the Bellator heavyweight grand prix? THEY ARE HYPE FOR THE BELLATOR HEAVYWEIGHT GRAND PRIX.

The happenings of Saturday night’s UFC 217 were simply too big to fit inside a normal episode of the Co-Main Event Podcast, so for this week’s show Ben and Chad have decided to supersize it. Ninety minutes of pure MMA goodness straight from their mouths to your ears, how does that strike you? They hope you like it, because at this point they can’t change it. From Georges St-Pierre’s shocking comeback victory over Michael Bisping to win the UFC middleweight title to T.J. Dillashaw and Rose Namajunas both dethroning champions most people expected to be dominant, this episode has it all. Was this the single greatest night in UFC history? Did GSP salt away GOAT status? And what of next weekend’s Fight Night 120, featuring Dustin Porier vs. Anthony Pettis and Matt Brown vs. Diego Sanchez. Buckle up, kids.

Batten down the hatches, CME Universe, it’s UFC 217 fight week. With just a week or so left before Michael Bisping actually defends his UFC middleweight title against Georges St-Pierre, Ben and Chad take a comprehensive look at what should end up being one of the biggest UFC events of late 2017. Aside from GSP-Bisping, they talk about the very real blood feud between Cody Garbrandt and TJ Dillashaw as well as Joanna Jedrzejczyk taking on Rose Namajunas for the women's strawweight belt. Also can’t forget last weekend’s action, which saw Derek Brunson KO Lyoto Machida and Colby Covington outdistance Demian Maia at UFC Fight Night 119.

Darren Till made the most of his first real spotlight moment in the Octagon on Saturday at UFC Fight Night 118, blowing through Donald Cerrone via first round TKO. Now it seems as though Till might be looking at a future matchup with Mike Perry, provided Platinum Mike gets past Santiago Ponzinibbio. So that could be something to look forward to watching. Also this weekend, Gegard Mousasi made his Bellator MMA debut, sneaking past Alexander Shlemenko via unanimous decision after getting his eye all kinds of wrecked by a Shlemenko left hand. Did you know next weekend marks the return of Lyoto Machida? Your dudes Ben and Chad talk about all that stuff. Oh, plus Conor McGregor’s ugly remarks to Artem Lobov. They talk about that, too.

Gdansk, Gdansk, Gdansk is where the UFC journeys this weekend for Fight Night 118. The main event of that card features Donald Cerrone against Darren Till, which is kind of a strange marquee matchup until you consider that Till might well have his eye on being the new Donald Cerrone. On this week’s episode of the Co-Main Event Podcast, Ben and Chad discuss what matchmakers might want to get from Cerrone vs. Till. They also look at Mark Hunt’s latest falling out with the UFC, which bubbled over in a profane and emoji-filled war of words this week. Also, did you know it’s only three weeks until UFC 217 and Michael Bisping’s encounter with Georges St-Pierre? So, like, only 100 staredowns to go before those guys get in the cage and do the damn thing over the middleweight title.

No big deal, you guys. Demetrious Johnson is just going to toss Ray Borg up in the air like a small child and then armbar him as he plummets to earth (which is something we absolutely do NOT recommend doing to a child). If you are one of these people who insists on continuing to try to cast aspersions on the UFC men’s flyweight champ--well--you starting to feel sheepish yet? Clearly, Johnson is on some otherworldly shit … and that’s why this week’s Co-Main Event Podcast wholeheartedly endorses him taking on the winner of Cody Garbrandt vs. T.J. Dillashaw next. Ben and Chad agree, it’s sort of a “been there, done that” feel with Mighty Mouse fighting other flyweight contenders at this point. Time to see how high the Mouse can fly, you know? In addition to that, your dudes talk about Tony Ferguson’s interim lightweight title win over Kevin Lee and then look at the notion of Lee fighting this fight with a big ol’ staph infection on his chest. So you might say there’s a little something in this episode for everyone.

UFC 216 comes our way this weekend from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The event will go on, the UFC says, just days after the deadliest mass shooting in modern American history struck the Las Vegas strip. It casts a macabre shadow from which to try to view an evening of MMA action, but that’s where we are in this country at the moment. On this episode of the CME, Ben and Chad look at Demetrious Johnson finally getting his chance to break Anderson Silva’s record for consecutive UFC title defenses. They also talk about Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee squaring off for an interim lightweight title and perhaps the opportunity to be a future opponent for Conor McGregor. Speaking of McGregor, the fighting Irishman made his first public appearance since losing to Floyd Mayweather in a boxing match. He had some ideas about who he’ll fight next. A lot of ideas, actually.

A pretty low-quality UFC event and a pretty high-quality Bellator event paced the weekend in MMA and you know that kind of role reversal is enough to get the creative juices flowing for the CME. On this episode, Ben and Chad talk about Jessica Andrade and Claudia Gadelha having a crackerjack women’s strawweight contender fight at UFC Fight Night 117. They also puzzle over the debut of Gokhan Saki and wonder if it’s good enough to be a fun fighter without being a terribly good one. They also take a broad look at what Bellator did, including a second fight for Aaron Pico, a highlight reel knockout for Paul Daley and a very Benson Henderson fight to cap things off.

Luke Rockhold returns from more than a year away, takes some time to shake off the rust and ultimately emerges from UFC Fight Night 116 with a second-round win via strikes over Dave Branch. Pretty much just what the doctor ordered for Rockhold, who got some decent work in, faced some adversity and then nonetheless re-established himself as one of the very best middleweights in the UFC. Interesting thing is going to see what happens now, what with Michael Bisping vs. Georges St-Pierre still on tap near the end of the year. Depending on who wins that bad boy, the 185-pound division might still have some time to kill before anybody gets a chance to take on the champion. In addition to Rockhold, Mike Perry had himself a night on Saturday, and then went ahead and called out Robbie Lawler. As if that what wasn’t enough hot Octagonal action for you, UFC Fight Night 117 comes at you this week, featuring Ovince St. Preux vs. Yushin Okami as its main event. Ben and Chad talk about all this stuff and more on this week’s Co-Main Event Podcast.

Plus, AYFKM and Just Sayin’ Stuff.
